There are a number of parties that make up the Health and Safety scene in New Zealand. This article helps to highlight the key contacts and in what scenario you may need to contact them. 

WorkSafe

WorkSafe New Zealand are the primary work health and safety regulator, that influence businesses and workers to meet their responsibilities and perform work that is healthy and safe. 

You are able to contact WorkSafe by ringing 0800 030 040 to report a health and safety concern you may have. Their enquiries team can also provide information regarding how the law may apply in a general sense, and good practices that may be relevant for your business or situation. 



Maritime NZ

Maritime NZ is the national regulatory, compliance and response agency for the safety, security and environmental protection of coastal and inland waterways. They work to ensure that the oceans and waterways of Aoteatoa are kept safe, secure, clean and sustainable.

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)

The CAA are a Crown entity that work to ensure that NZ aviation meets the legal standards that are set by the Minister of Transport, overseeing aviation safety and security. Their Aviation Security Service (AvSec) works in relation to airports for screening passengers and their luggage.

New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) / Waka Kotahi

The NZTA acts as the land transport regulator to deliver on land transport policy set by the Minister of Transport. They create and are in charge of a land transport system that connects people, products, and places.

Employment Relations Authority

The Employment Relations Authority is a Tribunal established under the Employment Relations Act, and they work to resolve employment relationship problems.

Environmental Protection Authority

The Environmental Protection Authority are a Crown Agent that report to the Minister for the Environment and the Minister for Climate Change on issues relevant to their portfolios. They are NZ's environmental regulator to ensure that we are meeting international obligations around environmental protection.

Health and Safety Association of New Zealand (HASANZ)

HASANZ is an umbrella organisation representing workplace health and safety professionals in NZ. They are a first point of contact for business leaders and government on workplace health and safety matters, and they are an expert advisory group that guide effective H&S policy in NZ.

Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC)

The purpose of the ACC is to focus on prevention, care, and recovery for everyone in New Zealand that is affected by an injury. They need to ensure that needs are met, and that people have the right care at the right time, while keeping levies fair and stable.
